public university of navarra faculty of health sciences. pamplona

facilitating the meeting is the fundamental objective of a university campus. the new building for the faculty of health sciences of the public university of navarra therefore has the opportunity to produce an architecture for the university community to meet with each other and with citizens, and with this attitude generate exchange of knowledge and meaning of belonging. thus, this need for relationship spaces for students and teachers within the campus becomes a main idea, which becomes a specific needs program organization.

the building conforms to the limits of the proposed site on all facades except the north, where we set back to build a regular and precise parallelepiped and expand the perimeter urban space. the uses are organized around the edges of the figure, leaving its heart empty, a space for interaction and encounter activated thanks to the needs program and its accesses.

the facade presents a dynamic quality that varies depending on the position of the observer with respect to it. thus, from afar, the building is seen as a red box, a color associated with the city of pamplona, traditionally used in addition to protect wood and also reminiscent of the red brick present in many of the oldest buildings on campus. however, as we get closer, the nuances generated by the depth of its facade and by the rhythm of the slats begin to be generated. this veil makes the building compositionally related to the existing one to which it is attached as two different ones that dialogue instead of trying to resemble it compositionally.

as on the urban scale, on the architectural scale, the need for relationship spaces for students and teachers within the campus becomes a main idea, which becomes an organization of the specific needs program. this idea is the generator of the main spatial feature of the building, a large central void that staggers across the building on the first floors and that fades like chimneys of light on reaching the last. this generates a rhythm of built and non-constricting enclosed in a regular parallelepiped where what is building and what is empty configure an intense relationship.

the sequence of full and empty spaces in x, y and z generates a stepped atrium, shared between the access ground floor and the simulation center located on the first floor, which gives it a more public character and a greater relationship with other parts of the campus and the city that could make use of it. the large stepped void visually connects the floors so that the user feels part of a whole by being in constant visual connection with other users of the building as well as with the campus.
